"One of the core themes in Radiant Mind is “natural release”, which refers to the way in which we spontaneously liberate disturbing thoughts and feelings by doing nothing. This way of dissolving our problematic conditions is also called “self liberation”. The key dynamic here is simply to not interfere, to not try to change or manipulate the situation in any way. Rather, we create space around it, letting it play itself out and dissipate on its own.
Natural release works very effectively with our everyday conditioned experiences. As Peter writes in Radiant Mind (p. 78), “Basically, we don’t intervene or meddle in our experience in any way at all; we leave what is, just as it is….When we let things be as they are, contracted emotions and compulsive thoughts often dissipate more quickly than if we meddle and interfere.” It’s really wonderful when our attachments and aversions, together with the suffering they cause, all spontaneously release, leaving us feeling spacious and liberated.
Lately, I have been contemplating an even more wonderful dimension of natural release, what I sometimes think of as the “cosmic” dimension. What I am seeing is that everything, literally everything, in existence follows the course of natural release. Things just show up out of nowhere, stay around for as long as they do, and then dissolve back into nowhere. There is no one “doing” this, no one to manipulate anything. It simply happens of itself – a spontaneous creativity that always takes place now/here, in no-time, with no past and no future.
And it is truly wondrous. Everything spontaneously arises, plays itself out, and then dissipates, or self-liberates, on its own. It’s like a glorious magic show, with us as an integral part of the show. The best part, though, is that we can see through the magic, knowing it as marvelous appearance, and recognize that our true nature is the unconditioned Ground out of which it all arises and into which it naturally releases."
